Mission Statement

The Dixon Adult Literacy Program (DALP) seeks to empower adult learners to their full potential guided by their personal goals.

Description

The Dixon Adult Literacy Program (DALP) began in the Spring of 2018 when a group of Dixon citizens saw the need for a literacy program like those available in the neighboring communities. Volunteers were trained and began tutoring students in June of that year.

Tutors meet with one student twice a week for a six month minimum time period. (A group is available for those students waiting for a tutor.) Individuals goals are set by the students themselves. Tutors use their familiarity with the English Language and materials provided by the program to help their students work towards these goals.

Recently, the group of students and tutors gathered to celebrate one year of successful learning. For most, the efforts made to study English, has resulted in a phenomenal leap in reading, writing and conversational skills. The one to one tutoring approach allows the student to have individualized lessons created for just him/her alone. This method has been found to be extremely effective in literacy programs around the country. DALP has a need for more caring, dedicated tutors to help with the growing list of students in our community.
