Mission Statement

Minnesota Connect Aphasia Now (MnCAN) is a non-profit dedicated to helping people with aphasia improve their quality of life and live fully and independently within their communities. The organization pursues three main activities focused directly on people with aphasia: provide conversation groups, function as a resource and develop community support. Aphasia affect a person's ability to communicate after a stroke or brain injury. It can lead to social isolation and depression.

Minnesota Connect Aphasia Now (MnCAN) was established as a non-profit 501(C)(3) organization in December 2013. It arose from six aphasia conversation groups developed and directed by Dr. Cindy Busch, a Speech Pathologist working with the Minnesota Stroke Association (MSA). These groups were provided under the umbrella of the MSA. in addition to providing conversation practice and strategies for people with aphasia, a major focus of the groups was to provide training of Speech Pathology graduated students in the Life Participation Approach to Aphasia (LPAA) and supported conversation strategies (SCA). We currently support over 70 persons with aphasia in 11 conversation groups, also have a care partner support group and a special education program for people with Primary Progressive Aphasia.
