Description

Alexandria City Public Schools is an urban K-12 public school system with 16 schools and 11,000 students. Alexandria operates twelve elementary schools (K-5), two middle schools (6-8), one ninth grade school, and one large senior high school, T.C. Williams (l0-12) with more than 2,000 students. Of the nine school districts in Northern Virginia, Alexandria has the highest number of young people (12-17 years) living below the poverty line. The percentage of students who receive free or reduced price meals has grown from 34% in l986 to 52% in 1999.
