Description

Akili Academy is located in the newly-renovated historic William Frantz building in the Upper Ninth Ward. The campus features state-of-the-art classrooms, a Black Box Theatre, a gymnasium, and computer lab.

Local and state officials joined members of the Akili Academy community for a ribbon-cutting ceremony on September 5, 2013. The event was planned in partnership with the Recovery School District (RSD) and commemorated the opening of the school. Frantz was one of the first sites of school integration in New Orleans when six-year-old Ruby Bridges attended the school in 1960. Elements of the site were restored to their original appearance in order to maintain the historical integrity of the building. Room 2306 serves as the "Ruby Bridges Room" with period furnishings and decor in honor of Mrs. Bridges’ brave contributions to society.
