To develop and maintain a system of parks that preserves open space and natural areas and offers outdoor recreation opportunities to the public.
Description
The LaGrange County Department of Parks and Recreation was formed in 1969, and now has 11 parks. It has a history of acquiring and preserving natural areas throughout the county. Park facilities and programs provide environmental education and opportunities for passive recreation, like hiking, birdwatching, fishing, and swimming. The Department continues to develop new programs, and add shelters and trail systems. Maple Wood Nature Center hosts the Maple Syrup Days event in March and provides a flexible community building for events and educational presentations. It is a destination for many local school field trips. Pine Knob Park has a 3-D archery course as part of the existing trail system, a lake for fishing, and walking trails through a variety of habitats. Delt Church Park has several pavilions for rental, a MegaTower playground, 18 hole disc golf course, and wooded walking trails. Dallas Lake Park features a public beach, wetland Nature Preserve, and several shelters for rent.
