Mission Statement

Founded in 1961, Amnesty International is a grassroots activist organization working throughout the world to

  • free prisoners of conscience,
  • win fair trials for political prisoners,
  • end torture, political killings and "disappearances" and
  • abolish the death penalty.

Amnesty members also work to create a culture of human rights, mounting national and local human rights education programs in schools, universities and the community at large. In 1977, Amnesty International was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for its work. Amnesty International USA (AIUSA) is the U.S. section of the organization.

Description

Amnesty International's members participate in it's work in a variety of ways. They write letters to government and other officials, they lobby their own representatives, they organize and participate in public demonstrations and other events. Sometimes they provide material help for victims of abuse, and sometimes they participate in research missions. In fact, Amnesty members exercise their intelligence and imaginations in almost unlimited ways.
