Mission Statement
The mission of STA is to conserve local populations of sea turtles, educate the public about the marine environment, and provide nature-based programs to adults with special needs.
Description
STA has 3 core focus areas: sea turtle conservation, marine education and engagement, and adult special needs programs.
Sea turtle conservation:
We have been monitoring beaches in southern PBC for sea turtle nests for 20 years. We document ~1,000 nests annually. We also help rescue injured sea turtles and sea birds and transport them to local rehabilitation centers.
Marine education and engagement:
We provide educational presentations on request to school groups and community groups. We also hold ~30 beach cleanups annually. Most beach cleanups are private events requested by corporations or school groups.
Special needs program:
We have a nature-based program for adults 18 yrs and older with special needs. The group meets four times a month at various locations throughout PBC. Several members of the program also participate in our microbusiness and make and sell crafts through the organization.
