To provide youth with interpersonal relationship skills, positive ethics, and increased interest in mathematics and reading related to the carpentry trade. To enable youth to acquire the use of hand tools to assemble wood products. Entrepreneurial skill training will give them basic understanding of how to manage money and of the importance of savings.
In 2004 Mustard Seed Wood, Inc was determined to be a 501(c)(3) as a fine woodworkers training program for youth ranging in ages from 9-17. The pilot class began in November 2006.
The pilot class indicated that students had increased attention to the activities and lessons. More cooperation was shown within the class and more mutual respect was given as the students evaluated the workmanship within the groups. There was a decrease in aggressive behavior and absenteeism.
The pilot also enabled the students to use the important course objective of assertiveness, workplace principles, patience, critical thinking and teamwork in as they completed furniture pieces.
