Mission Statement

Friends of Fort Fisher is a membership-based nonprofit formed to support Fort Fisher State Historic Site. We partner with Fort Fisher State Historic Site and the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources to preserve this historic battlefield and training ground, interpret the Fort Fisher stories and promote a greater understanding of and appreciation for the significance of Fort Fisher’s role in our history.

Description

Fort Fisher State Historic Site is the most visited historic site in North Carolina. As defender of Wilmington and its blockade runners during the American Civil War, Fort Fisher played an integral role toward the end of our country's bloodiest war. Later, it served as an anti-aircraft auxiliary training ground for Camp David during WWII.

Today, it's free programming includes hands-on children's programming in the summer, a WWII living history event in the Fall, and a re-enactment event commemorating the anniversary of the Second Battle of Fort Fisher (American Civil War) in January. It serves local families, school groups, retirement groups, military groups, Jr. ROTC, Boys/Girls Club summer camp, YMCA summer camp, Fort Fisher descendants and tourists.

While Fort Fisher is a State Site, state appropriations fall far short of its needs. All programming, as well as some maintenance, some staffing and some exhibits, are made possible solely by memberships, donations and grants made through Friends of Fort Fisher.

We are currently working towards a new Visitor's Center and expanded earthworks. The new Visitor's Center will replace the original built in 1965 to accommodate 25,000 visitors annually. Capital campaign fundraising is underway.
