Here's a sample of our volunteer opportunities:VIEW AS
We aim to: • Promote food access in the City of Reading. • Strengthen food systems by connecting local farmers to consumers, and stimulating our local economy. • Cultivate a thriving seasonal event through free entertainment, education, and community programming to engage all community members. • Contribute to downtown Reading revitalization by transforming Penn Square at 5th and Penn Streets into a vibrant destination in the heart of downtown Reading. We're an open-air farmers market in downtown Reading that features locally grown fresh fruit, vegetables, produce, dairy products, artisan cheeses, breads and more. The Market hosts a wide range of family and nutritional programs, live entertainment, healthy cooking demonstrations, youth activities, and more. The Penn Street Market is managed by the Greater Reading Chamber Alliance.
The Historic Penn Street Farmers Market
The Penn Street Market is one of our favorite events in Downtown Reading. The Penn Street Market is one of the oldest running markets around. It celebrated its 250 th anniversary back in 2016. For 16 weeks each year, you can walk downtown on a Thursday afternoon and visit a variety of vendors from food trucks to local farms.Partners and Programs
In 2018, $19,400+ was generated through SNAP, Berks & Reading Farm Bucks, & the Farmers Market Nutrition Prog. (FNMP). This is a 13% increase over the 2017 season! Further, survey results indicate that the Market continues to fulfill the need for easy access to fresh fruits and vegetables.Looking Ahead
We are excited about the 2019 season and want to utilize the Market as a community platform and opportunity to highlight assets in downtown Reading and the community at large. We hope to accomplish this by partnering with a variety of organizations throughout the season. The Market team is busy with planning - we welcome all questions and interest.
