Mission Statement

Shake It Out, Inc a 501(c)(3) non-profit is a tuition free summer theater program that seeks to empower female identifying teen girls from NYC based neighborhoods regardless of geographic location, socio-economic status, nationality and/or ethnic origin to explore storytelling through theater in a peaceful, supportive, fun and educational setting. Shake It Out, Inc. is founded on the premise that exploration through theatre arts is essential to youth development and contributes to the overall social and emotional well-being of young people.

Description

Our vision is two-fold. First, our program is aimed at increasing literacy, writing skills, team building/communication skills, self-expression, and friendship through theatre. Second, we believe exposure to life on a college campus is both an inspirational and critical part of youth development. During a summer program with Shake It Out, participants will have access to state of the art theatre department facilities and SUNY New Paltz in upstate, NY. They will be housed in the campus dorms and eat in the dining hall. In addition, participants will hike, enjoy the natural surroundings of the Hudson Valley, and participate in classes offered by the campus’ library to conduct further research for their theater piece. Most importantly they will have the opportunity to develop meaningful and supportive friendships. To participate in the Shake It Out, Inc. summer or weekend program, participants do not have to audition or come with any previous theatre/performance experience. Participants need only to have an open mind, an interest in the arts and a commitment to the program.
