HomeAgain VR's mission is to bring virtual reality to seniors and to people with limited mobility. We believe that VR can be used as a tool for the enrichment and empowerment of people in memory care, assisted living, hospice, hospitals, and more.
HomeAgain VR visits senior living communities in order to provide virtual reality activities to their residents. Participants have the opportunity to explore different parts of the world in VR, experience peaceful scenery paired with relaxing music, play games, create artwork, watch videos, and more. We work with small groups of residents where we assist them in using our Oculus Go headsets.
Our tasks include helping participants put the VR headsets on, teaching participants the basics of how to use the VR controller, pulling up specific content on the headsets (ex. resident wants to be on a beach, we load it for them), sitting and talking with the residents, assisting in removing the headsets, and sanitizing the headsets with alcohol wipes in between uses.
Volunteering for HomeAgain VR is a very rewarding experience. As a volunteer you get to play around with an exciting new technology, work with a people from a variety of backgrounds who look forward to your visits, and best of all, bring smiles to faces and take part in incredible moments.
My favorite part of volunteering is hearing resident's stories and finding VR experiences for them. In my several volunteer sessions I have witnessed both caretakers and residents of elder care facilities laugh, cry (with joy!), be amazed, and have old memories triggered. In some cases you work with disabled individuals or those in memory care, and seeing their faces light up with recognition when you show them a place they went in their youth is incredibly moving. I can't recommend HomeAgain VR enough!
I've helped out with several of HomeAgain VR's activities in senior living. The atmosphere is always happy and energetic thanks to enthusiastic volunteers and senior residents who seem to love the new technology. I saw a woman cry tears of joy when she got to visit the Oregon Coast again thanks to VR.
