The Westerners are a volunteer driven organization founded in 1995. The team is composed of college baseball players from all over the USA and plays in the New England Collegiate Baseball League. We play a 44 game schedule in June and July against teams from all six New England states. 29 former Westerners have played Major League Baseball and an additional 250 have played in the minor leagues. We also bring in 20 college and high school students each summer in our internship program. Many of our interns have gone on to sports-related careers. Volunteers can fill a wide variety of roles and devote as much or as little time to the organization as suits them. Examples of possible roles include volunteering on game nights, working on fundraising or filling a role you create. We are especially in need of a volunteer to run our social media program outside June and July, and a volunteer to be our webmaster and manage our website. Our social media volunteer would be responsible for keeping our social media active from August through May with posts about former Westerners, the upcoming season’s roster or anything else relevant to the team. Creativity is encouraged. The social media volunteer would also be responsible for posts soliciting interns and host families, and promoting our season kickoff celebrity breakfast. During the season they would be responsible for promoting our September golf tournament and perhaps a few other things that fall outside of the on-field action. This role might require 5+ hours per week while getting up to speed but probably no more than a few hours a week thereafter. A strong knowledge of social media postproduction software and a strong knowledge of baseball is required. Our Webmaster volunteer would be responsible for keeping our website up to date. While much on field related information (roster, game results, etc.) is generated automatically, there is much that can be done around game night promotions, breakfast and golf tournament promotion and much more. This role probably requires several hours per week for a while as the website is brought up to standard, but only a couple of hours per month thereafter. Someone could take on both roles if their time and interest allows. For these two roles we need people who like baseball and are willing to learn about the team, its mission and its history. The reward will be spending time with likeminded people and contributing to the success of an organization that entertains local baseball fans and helps young people develop on and off the field.
