Disaster Action Team (DAT) volunteers are critically important - not just to the Red Cross - but to our community. They are part of a team that responds year-round, 24/7 to provide comfort, hope, and Red Cross services to those impacted by local emergencies including home fires, floods, storm damage, and other localized events. During a response, teams of at least two responders are on the scene to meet with the impacted clients, assess the situation, and provide the appropriate assistance. DAT volunteers provide compassion, connections, and referrals to community and Red Cross services such as financial assistance, Mental Health, Health Services, and Spiritual Care. Requirements: Must be compassionate, an active listener, and demonstrate impartiality. Must have basic computer skills, be comfortable using technology, and have access to a smartphone and/or computer with internet access. Valid drivers license for response and attend regularly scheduled team meetings. Time Commitment: DAT volunteers commit to being on-call at least 6-8 shifts each month. The length of a shift varies by county (typically 6, 8, or 12 hours per on-call shift). Training: Volunteers must complete 8 to 10 hours of required online training within 60 days of joining the team. Interested in volunteering? Are you a licensed medical professional? Do you want to volunteer your expertise in your community? The Red Cross needs you! The Red Cross has an ongoing need for individuals with active and unencumbered medical licenses to serve as a Disaster Health Services volunteer. In this role, volunteers support the Disaster Action Team volunteers, responding to year-round local disasters such as home fires, floods, tornados, etc. The Disaster Health Services volunteer meets the disaster related health needs of clients in activities such as replacing durable health equipment, medication, glasses, dentures, etc. Time Commitment: Disaster Health Services volunteers work virtually to meet and assist those impacted by disasters. Disaster Health Services volunteers rotate being on-call for one week (8 am to 5 pm every) every 6 weeks. Volunteers typically assist 5-10 hours/month. Disaster Health Services Volunteer Qualifications: Active and unencumbered licensure as a Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse, Licensed Vocational Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, Advanced Practice Nurse, Medical Doctor, Doctor of Osteopathy, Physician Assistant, Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic, Retired RN/LPN/LVN if the state in which the license is granted allows for full scope of practice for the volunteer. Title: Disaster Action Team Burke County Description: A Disaster Action Team (DAT) volunteer is a part of a local team that responds to local disasters including home fires and major storms to provide comfort, hope, and Red Cross services. DAT volunteers ease the difficulties of people unexpectedly overwhelmed by disasters. They are called on to engage with clients, first responders, and the public. VIRTUAL VOLUNTEER: Volunteers follow up with those impacted by disasters via phone or computer to provide a "Good Hello" and complete a Client Intake Worksheet. During the response, volunteers provide compassion and resources like financial assistance for lodging to those displaced from their home. They may also provide community referrals and referrals to other Red Cross Services like Mental Health, Health Services, and Spiritual Care. ON-THE-SCENE-VOLUNTEER: In person service delivery is a vital part of our mission. This could include on scene at a house fire, operating a shelter after a major disaster, or providing canteen to first responders during an emergency. PROVIDE A "GOOD HELLO": Whether volunteers assist virtually or on-the scene, Red Crossers must be adaptable, flexible, and provide a "Good Hello" - to those who have experienced a disaster - as they now become our clients in our care. Responders must be able to demonstrate the following qualities in their "Good Hello": Care and Compassion Impartiality and Empathy Active listening Confidence to help on their "Road to Recovery" ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: 18 years or older Available to be "on-call" for one week per month (this is flexible and can be done in shifts) Have a valid driver's license and vehicle (unless interested in virtual-only response options) Must have basic computer skills and knowledge Access to computer/tablet/smartphone and good connectively internet for response A "self-starter" to complete required online training courses and attend monthly meetings Able to collaborate with other Disaster Action Team members who are on scene and those responding virtually to ensure service delivery to those in need.
