Help JFS welcome new refugee families to Colorado! Volunteers who work directly with refugee clients typically go to the client’s house once a week to provide support and information. For many new refugees, this becomes their first U.S. friendship with someone outside their community. Many of the connections made when we match volunteers with refugees become deep and long-lasting relationships that are equally meaningful to both parties. The Support Team program matches groups of volunteers with a refugee family to support them in the refugee resettlement process. Groups consist of 2-6 members and work directly with a family to assist them in completing specific tasks. Examples of these tasks include help using public transportation, grocery shopping, ESL tutoring, and introducing clients to their surrounding neighborhood. We ask for a time commitment of approximately 3 to 5 hours per week for around 6 months. At this time, we are only accepting already formed groups. We ask that you only fill out ONE application per group. Each group is required to have a Team Lead who will be the primary contact with our Volunteer Services staff. Please have your team leader fill out the application through our website: https://www.jewishfamilyservice.org/volunteer/volunteer-refugees. Due to the nature of the short notice we receive before families arrive, your team could be matched with a case within a week or 90 days after the team’s completion of vetting and training.

Support the Resettlement Services program by ensuring that refugees’ homes are set up and ready to welcome them upon their arrival. This includes moving furniture and other household items into an apartment or house, putting together furniture and other household items so they are ready to go upon clients’ arrival. On-call/as needed. Typical housing setup takes approximately 4 hours - half a day with most shifts during weekday business hours. Due to the nature of the housing market and short notice we receive before families arrive, it is often difficult to schedule housing setups more than a few days in advance. Last-minute emails requesting volunteers is the norm. Interested? Submit our application: https://www.volgistics.com/appform/981458887 Select "Housing Setup" under "Assignment Preferences," and we’ll be in touch with more info and next steps!

Many of our older adults who live in their own homes go days without the phone ringing or seeing another face. You can help break this social isolation by providing companionship to an older adult once a week or every other week for 1.5 or 2 hours. With your help, we can increase the number of seniors who have a friendly visit. As a volunteer, you will have the satisfaction of knowing you have touched the life of another. Interested? Make a difference in your life and your community and join the Jewish Family Service Citizens chapter of Best Buddies International for adults in their one-to-one friendship program. In the JFS chapter, Jewish adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) become buddies and are matched with Jewish neurotypical adults who become their peer buddies. When you become a buddy, the lasting friendship that develops helps to reduce the social isolation that is frequently associated with individuals with IDD. Best Buddies International is a program with chapters all over the world. Jewish Family Service Best Buddies Citizens chapter matches adults with and without IDD in one-to-one friendships that develop and are sustained over many years. The JFS chapter is unique in that Jewish adults are matched with each other with the goal of creating deeper friendships and connections to the Colorado Jewish community and each other. Interested?
