Mission Statement

Tonic Theater Company is dedicated to increasing public knowledge and understanding of history and science through the power of theater.

Description

Tonic recently launched The Makers: Reykjavik, a campaign to publicize our upcoming production of Reykjavik, by Pulitzer Prize winner Richard Rhodes. The Makers brings artists, writers, actors, and directors together with the policymakers and diplomats that make history. Featured were Rhodes, senior U.S. arms control negotiator Ambassador Thomas Graham, Jr. (Ret.), Edward Gero and David Bryan Jackson (Gorbachev & Regan in Reykjavik), and Tonic artistic director Kurt Elftmann in conversation. Reykjavik concerns the 1986 Iceland meeting between President Reagan and Soviet leader Gorbachev and how they missed the chance to rid the world of nuclear weapons. The next Makers will be in early 2019, with further insights into the world of the Cold War, and Reykjavik in particular, from those who were there.
Tonic is a synthesis of history, science, and theater, using technology to reach across the country and around the world to entertain and educate. By meeting a series of short-term goals we're moving steadily forward with our mission. Tonic’s public readings provide both audiences and artists a live experience of the scripts being considered. We’ve also partnered with The Cultural Projects of the National Academy of Sciences, American Physical Society, & Carnegie Science. For the past five years we've been invited to participate in the Page-To-Stage Festival at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC.
