Mission Statement

The purpose for which this corporation is organized is to promote, create, and regulate an operational museum for the "Greater Alton Area" in order to preserve the area's history and art. The museum is dedicated to collecting, preserving, interpreting, and exhibiting artifacts from 1673 to the present for educational and entertainment purposes.

Description

Since the summer of 1971 we have dedicated ourselves to inspiring community members and beyond to appreciate Alton's important heritage. AMHA's legacy includes preserving architectural information, illuminating influential personalities (Lovejoy, Wadlow, Lincoln, M. Davis), local artists and architects, and community/organizational educators.
We host monthly presentations, provide an annual Jazz festival dedicated to the master Miles Davis, support responsible environmental projects/organizations (Piasa Sierra Club, Veteran therapy garden, etc.), are members of Toast Master's International. AMHA also helps provide injured workers with alternative income options via the company ReEmployability.
Achievements:

  • our past organizers received the Studs Terkel award
  • recognized as community renaissance initiators
  • recognized for outstanding partnership initiatives
  • recognized by Google for Veterans service
  • and deemed the original 'Alton Rebels'
