Our volunteer program is an unpaid volunteer program designed for volunteers to assist in all tasks like feeding, maintenance and entertain animals that are living in the shelter. Volunteers help us also welcoming visitors at the entrance, explaining our goals and answering any questions that the visitors may have about the shelter or its resident animals. Learning about wildlife management will grow as the volunteer spend more days in the shelter, from positive interaction with animals to good diet and reproduction If you like reptiles, amphibians, mammals, birds and are also interested in preserving the environment, you can be perfect for this program. Volunteer activities: interacting with visitors maintenance of animal enclosures answer basic questions about animals training of wild resident animals that are in the shelter cleaning, preparation of diets among many other things... If you like wildlife, you will enjoy. Volunteer to stay a month: This type of volunteering is perfect for adult volunteers who want help for a longer time. The volunteer can come every day he or she wants within the hole month. It is necessary also always to assist to the shelter shirt and respect the conditions of volunteering. Volunteer Caregiver for a day: perfect for little animal lover boys and girls that only want to go on weekends or a few times per month. To volunteer you must have more than 7 years and you have to love animals! We ACCEPT volunteers who need to perform Community Work in their high school and Community Work in their University career. General Information: It is located in Nicoya Peninsula (North Pacific Coast of Costa Rica) Volunteer activities: - Beach cleaning - Day and Night Patrolling -Maintenance of the Turtle Hatchery -Train cleaning - Species of Turtles that arrive: Baula, Negra Lora, hawksbill Season: All year Minimum duration of participation: 10 days. We ACCEPT volunteers who need to perform Community Work in their high school and Community Work in their University career. Arrival Airport: San Jose (SJO) Juan Santamaría International Airport. Work Schedule: Depend of daily activities can be night and day time, Minimum 6 hours per day. Requirements: Basic Spanish (not necessary), independent bus ride to/from project site. Age Limits: 18 years old minimum to 60 years old max. Airlines: American, United, Delta, US Airways, Copa, Taca, Avianca, Spirit Airways. Vaccinations: Routine Vac, Hep-A and Typhoid wwwnc.cdc.gov. WHAT DO MY FEES PAY FOR? Accommodation: National park. Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included. Internet: available in some projects. Arrival: Airport (SJO) meet and greet by VNCR Staff and Airport transfer on arrival to San Jose Orientation: Orientation upon arrival. The Animal Rescue Center gives to the animals a second chance at life. Our dedicated staff and selfless volunteers work tirelessly to help these animals heal, keep them safe, rehabilitate them, and eventually re-release them into their natural habitat in the Costa Rican rainforest Who Can Volunteer? All who are interested! You should come ready to pitch in whenever necessary and be willing live in basic conditions. There is no max age - we have had volunteers in their late sixties stay with us. Minimum stay The minimum time to volunteer is one week; takes at least this amount of time to learn how to properly be able to care for the animals and receive the full experience. However, that volunteers who stay for two weeks or more tend to have the best experiences with us. The daily tasks include: Preparing food for the animals Feeding the howler monkeys, capuchin monkeys, sloths, birds (Scarlet Macaws,parrots, owls, and others), olingo, and kinkajousCleaning animal enclosures Cleaning the common areas Giving extra attention to the orphaned young animals (for example, Feluco; a young howler monkey) General tidying of the Center (sweeping pathways, etc.) Preparing toys and stimulating exercises for the animals Caring for our resident dogs And other great contributions you might have! We welcome creative initiative! What Are the Conditions Like? Costa Rica has a warm and humid environment, but the Center is shaded, making the working conditions comfortable. At the center have electricity, flush toilets, unheated showers, and Wi-Fi. The electricity occasionally goes out for several hours at a time, so is recommend volunteers bring a headlamp to get around at night. The Wi-Fi can be inconsistent, so come prepared to be off-line at times. The dorm rooms for the volunteers have 6-12 beds per room, and the center provide sheets and mosquito netting for each bed. The center has a pool, common area, book exchange, fire pit, and hammocks for relaxing during downtime. The cook prepares a variety of dishes for the communal meals, from traditional Costa Rican food to a mix of international dishes. There is a vegetarian option at every meal. If you have specific dietary needs, please inform us ahead of time and we will do our best to accommodate your needs. The center has a refrigerator available for the volunteers for personal snacks. There is a washing machine and clothesline available to clean your clothing. The volunteer arrives to San Jose, staying with a tica family, the next day preferably Sunday morning take a bus to the project. Accommodation in the project are in shared houses with rooms of 4 or 6 person. Our volunteers in general must comply a work schedule of 6 to 8 hours, 5 days a week, depending on the needs and structure of each project.
