Mission Statement

SMASH serves and supports musicians to be healthy by providing access to free or very low cost: mental health therapy, dental care, hearing protection, an annual doctor visit, support for navigating the healthcare system and other health services that support musicians' health. Working musicians must have access to affordable healthcare to prosper and continue to enrich our community.

Description

We started SMASH to help preserve this city’s rich musical culture. Seattle is a town of incredible artists who make huge contributions to the Pacific Northwest culture but often they do not share in the region’s prosperity. Working musicians, in addition to touring and performing, often have multiple jobs to afford to live in or near Seattle - often without basic healthcare insurance. We formed SMASH to support our local musicians and connect them with affordable healthcare.

To date, SMASH has partnered with several local healthcare providers to subsidize preventative care for local area working musicians. We recognize the strength of these existing healthcare resources and through our services, we hope to remove financial barriers.

We have prioritized the need for screening and preventative care for music-induced hearing loss. Our Custom Hearing Protection Program in partnership with established community resources provided hearing testing, auditory consultation, and fittings for custom-fitted filtered earplugs/high fidelity earplugs for 25 Seattle-area musicians.

Our future goals are more ambitious. We are hoping to connect musicians to a full range of healthcare-related services including mental health services and rehabilitation services for alcohol and drug addiction.
