Mission Statement

United Readers of America, a non-profit organization, in partnership with the Ohio Coalition for the Education of Children with Disabilities, are taking on the problem of illiteracy, with one-on-one tutoring in the schools. They work with a method of teaching that is proven to solve even the most difficult reading disabilities -children with dyslexia, those who are learning a second language, and children in poverty. Research has shown early, effective instruction can prevent academic casualties. The founders of URA are bringing their skills to two schools in the Columbus area and hope to provide reading tutoring services to more than 60 children this upcoming academic year. But they need your help. The help of people like you who want to give back to their communities and to children and families in need.

Description

The United Readers of America project (URA Reader) will address barriers to proficient reading faced by first through third grade students in high-risk populations, such as students who have low socioeconomic status, are English language learners, and/or possess markers for dyslexia. The Ohio Coalition for the Education of Children with Disabilities, in collaboration with Reading BootCamp, LLC, will promote student access to evidence-based, high quality structured literacy curriculum within central Ohio elementary schools, in order for students to pass the Ohio Third Grade Reading Guarantee on time. This program will make it available to students who otherwise would not receive the necessary educational opportunities for reaching their full potential, which in turn improves societal well-being.
