Mission Statement
West Oakland Stories is an educational and empowering movement, where we, the Black elders of West Oakland share our stories and our experiences with the world so we can connect the world with Oakland’s living history. The goal of the movement is to give a voice to those people who experienced the growth and development of Oakland’s cultural mystique, so those who lived during the development of Oakland’s historical lore can relay their first-hand experiences to the generations following them, who may be generally unaware of how these stories and revelations paved the way for the community to have developed at that time in Oakland
Description
We begin the movement by sharing our stories, because getting to know us is getting to know West Oakland. The West Oakland Stories (WOS) film is about The Oakland Black Elders/Pioneers from the 1940s 50s, and 60s expressing their positive feelings, experiences, and history. We want to point out that you’ll very rarely hear a negative word throughout the film, and that’s because, despite the negative Black reputation Oakland has, there isn’t a lot of negativity to speak of.
