Alzheimer's disease is a progressive, debilitating, and eventually fatal neurological illness affecting an estimated 4-5 million Americans. Depending on the progression of the disease, companionship can be provided for the patient through reading, going on walks outside, flipping through photos, doing puzzles, knitting, and any other stimulating activity! In cases of patients with advanced Alzheimer’s, providing companionship by simply holding their hand can give reassurance and comfort so that they feel safe and secure! Make a Positive Difference in your Community: Provide Comfort and Companionship! As a Hospice Volunteer, you can support the patient and/or family in a variety of ways that suit your personality: provide companionship, encourage patient life review, take a patient for a walk, play a game, listen to music, watch a movie, be a spiritual support, vigil volunteer (sitting with someone who is actively dying), and/or participating in special projects. The possibilities are endless and we are flexible to fit your busy schedule! Brookdale Hospice provides an individualized program of physical, emotional, and practical care for the patient, with an emphasis on pain control and symptom management. We emphasize comfort, dignity and respect, and we believe that centering our focus on both the patient and the family enables us to provide the best care. **For Patient Safety: must be able to pass a drug screen, background check, and 2-Step TB test. Brookdale Hospice is looking for volunteers who can share their sewing skills to create activity mats (also known as busy blankets, activity aprons, fidget quilts) for Alzheimer's and Dementia Hospice patients! Many of our Alzheimer's patients are in the late stages of the disease, where they typically become less verbal and more fidgety. "Activity Mats" or "Busy Blankets" can have a soothing and comforting effect for our Alzheimer's patients-keeping their hands busy and mind stimulated! We would love for you to be a part of our support team! We will provide you with templates, links to informative "busy blanket" websites, and things to avoid sewing onto your unique creations! Brookdale Hospice would LOVE for you to be a permanent volunteer! Since we cannot share the activity mats from patient to patient due to infection control, we would love to be able to onboard a volunteer who would be willing to sew new mats when we are in need. BUT, if you would just like to sew a few mats and do a one time donation, we are always and forever grateful for your help, as well! :) Please reach out and email me if you would like to contribute and/or view a few pictures and examples of activity mats we have distributed to our patients in the past: AUDREY BENITEZ, Volunteer Coordinator Email: abenitez2@brookdale.com Brookdale Hospice - San Jose & Sacramento Compassion lives here every day.
