Mission Statement

Cal-Wood has built upon our legacy of providing environmental and STEM education using our pristine 1200 acres as our outdoor classroom. As our expert staff leads children through hands-on, field-based exploration of local plants, animals, fire ecology, forestry, geology, and pond ecosystems, they gain a greater appreciation of the environment and the tools to become future stewards of the earth. The volunteers will help our Natural Resource manager and our maintenance director, preserving the buildings and classrooms as well as tree trimming, wood log hauling.

Description

Cal-Wood incorporates best practices in environmental and science education, breaks down socio-economic and cultural barriers to nature-based learning, innovates strategies to engage Latino participants best, and models conservation and stewardship.

Cal-Wood integrates conservation into all land management practices, follows best fire prevention practices, and engages hundreds of volunteers annually in service projects, creating a direct connection between our volunteers and the land. In 2016, 766 volunteers logged 3,156 total volunteer hours.

Roger and Oral Calvert donated their Boulder County foothills ranch in the late 1970’s, along with an endowment to The Pilot Trust, with a vision that their land is used as a place for people to learn about the environment. Shortly after that, The Pilot Trust established their unique 1,040-acre mountain property as a private, non-profit education center called Cal-Wood Education Center. (The Calvert Family also donated 500 acres of land to Denver Public School District for what is now Balarat Outdoor Education Center.) The name Cal-Wood honors the names of the Calvert Family and Larry Wood, a close friend who was instrumental in the establishment of the organization. Since 1981, Cal-Wood Education Center has conducted programs that honor the Calverts’ love for sharing nature with others, particularly children.
