Description

Earn-A-Bike@School Program is a semester-long, youth development program that incentivizes students by offering the opportunity to earn a brand new bicycle, helmet, light and lock. Our curriculum teaches students the importance of physical activity, maintaining a healthy diet and key bicycle safety and maintenance skills. The goal is to increase attendance and academic performance, and decrease negative behaviors in the classroom. The culmination of the program is our Bike Build Event, which is a six-hour long program where students, with the help of a volunteer, assemble their new bike, reinforce what they have learned about safe cycling and learn how to support each other when riding as a group. The event acts as a celebration of the students’ commitment and dedication to improving themselves and concludes in a two-mile group ride.

Earn-A-Bike Bike Shop is a nonprofit bicycle repair organization. We provide low cost bicycle maintenance courses, parts and repairs. We also offer a 15-hour work-trade opportunity where you learn bike mechanics through guided work at the program facility. After 15-hours, participants pick a bicycle and refurbish it to fit their commuting needs. Upon completion participants get a dependable bicycle and the knowledge, skills and resources to maintain it.

I believe helping out children in any way possible is a great volunteering opportunity. Especially those who work hard despite their circumstances.
