Folio: The Seattle Athenaeum at Pike Place Market seeks to fill five volunteer board positions in 2024. Mission: Folio engages people more broadly and deeply with books, authors, and each other. Vision: To build a welcoming, diverse community of readers, writers, and thinkers deeply informed by the insights uniquely available from books and authors. Values: Folio values transformative conversations among diverse communities. Folio values equitable engagement with the ideas found in books. Folio values a community inspired by its connections. Folio fosters compassion, learning, connection, and civil discourse. Services: Our diverse and innovative programming includes author talks, lectures, readings, book discussion groups, civic panels, music programs, and special events. We offer an excellent third-place workspace and a special venue in the heart of the Pike Place Market with views of Elliott Bay. We’ve also expanded our regional reach through online programming. Higher Purpose: We live in a society where practically infinite information is offered to everyone everywhere and all the time. There are many benefits to this technology-driven miracle. Still, the costs are high-polarization, anxiety, and confusion-because so much of the information people receive is fragmented, unreliable, and out of context. Folio engages the community with defragmented, reliable, and richly contextualized knowledge, an urgently needed corrective. Intentions: We plan to expand in 2024-our programs, budget, and membership. We recently surveyed our members, and they love us-but the phrase "one of Seattle’s best-kept secrets" kept coming up. We are looking for board members who are passionate about Folio’s mission and are energized and ready to help us grow and diversify our membership, help us seek out new partners and sponsors, and help us raise funds to extend our reach and expand our impact. Board requirements: Board members are appointed to an initial three-year term, during which we expect each board member to be actively involved in at least 10+ hours a month and for the following activities: Fundraise and support fundraising efforts. Give a meaningful personal financial donation. Attend monthly board meetings (Third Thursday at 4:00pm) and actively participate in at least one working committee or initiative. Current examples include strategy, finance, board development, governance, and assisting staff with planning for fundraising events: Increase public awareness of Folio, our mission, and our programs through your networks, social media, and personal outreach. Participate in the cultivation of current and future Folio supporters, sponsors and future board members. Support staff by bringing your unique skills and background. Can regularly make events and board meetings on Zoom and in person at Folio's location. This is a volunteer position.
