VITAS Healthcare(r) is looking for kind and caring people to help terminally ill patients and their families - just by being there at the end of life. 11th-Hour (Vigil) Volunteers should be comfortable around death and dying and be familiar with the dying process. Most importantly, 11th-Hour Volunteers must be able to meet the unique needs of the patient and family by offering a calming presence. We are especially looking for volunteers who would be available at short notice to provide 2-4 hours shifts. VITAS Volunteer patient care orientation, and the 11 th Hour Training is provided free of charge to help you learn the skills required to be an outstanding hospice volunteer. VITAS invites friendly and well-behaved pets to join the Paw Pals SM program, in which animals and their humans learn how to visit patients at the end of their life. A registered VITAS Paw Pals SM visitor can offer comfort, bring back memories, encourage activity and provide unconditional love to VITAS patients. Your visits leave behind memories of you and your pet, and rekindle thoughts of other pets. Pet visits can sometimes reach a patient when no one else can. Our Paw Pals SM brightens the day for everyone when they visit. All kinds of pets are invited to join VITAS’ Paw Pals Club. Administrative volunteers promote hospice care by helping perform clerical assignments in an office setting. These assignments can include helping process mail outs, filing, data entry, answering phones, restocking supplies, making packets, plus many other tasks. VITAS Volunteer orientation is provided free of charge to help you learn the skills required to be an outstanding Office Volunteer. VITAS Healthcare(r) is looking for musical volunteers who are able to play musical instruments and/or sing for hospice patients living at home, in the hospital or in long term care facilities. Sometimes what a hospice patient needs most is a way to express feelings without talking. By playing or singing their favorite songs or hymns, VITAS music volunteers help patients and families reconnect with feelings and memories that can bring about a sense of peace and happiness. VITAS provides training on how to work with people at the end of life. The volunteer provides the talent, compassion and time. Assignments are made according to the volunteer’s time and location. VITAS Bereavement volunteers make a real difference in the emotional and spiritual stability of our patients’ families. Trained bereavement volunteers may be assigned families to call or visit, asked to help organize community support groups and memorial services, or do bereavement mailings; all with the support and guidance of the VITAS bereavement team. VITAS Volunteer orientation is provided free of charge to help you learn the skills required to be a hospice volunteer. Additional training is provided about the stages of grief, how to communicate and encourage the bereaved, and how to recognize complicated grief. Volunteers work with the support of VITAS’ manager of volunteers, bereavement manager and/or chaplain to provide a caring presence to a grieving individual. Time and dates are ongoing and flexible.
