Home VNA Volunteers visit our Hospice patients in the nursing home, or private home setting to provide companionship or brief respite care for the caregiver. Volunteer duties may include reading to patients, listening to music, watching a movie, or making a small snack. Patient volunteers are asked to complete our background check process and training program both online and in person. At VNA of NWI, our volunteers are an integral part of our team and assist in many of the day to day activities that help our agency run smoothly. In order to safeguard the patients and families in our care, volunteers may be asked to complete background checks, TB tests, online training programs, continuing education in-services, and other required documentation in order to volunteer with our team. Please contact our Volunteer Services Coordinator, Erica Kerkes, at ekerkes@vnanwi.org or 219.531.8057 if you are interested in volunteering with VNA of NWI.

Getting older isn’t always easy. Many people would prefer to stay in their own homes for as long as possible instead of moving to a long-term care facility. Figuring out how to do that safely can be a challenge. Our VNA Medical Guardian help buttons are vital in helping a person stay at home and maintain their independence as they age. Our VNA Medical Guardian help button can benefit the life and well-being of clients by providing easy access to emergency services, help anytime it is needed, and maintain independence. VNA Medical Guardian, a not-for-profit program, depends on volunteers to meet our mission to provide compassionate care and support for Medical Guardian clients. Medical Guardian Volunteers deliver personal emergency response systems (help buttons) as needed in the homes of the elderly, disabled, those recovering from surgery and the chronically ill. Volunteers deliver the system inside the client's home and sit and chat with the client, taking time to explain and show the system to the client. Training is provided. This opportunity is great for a person who likes to meet new people & talk with them. This is also a good fit for someone who likes flexible scheduling. You tell us what day(s) and times you prefer, and what area you prefer to work in (Valpo, Porter County, Lake County, etc) and we schedule appointments for those day(s) and times, in those areas. Estimated time commitment is once a week, for 1-2 hours a week. (Pictured is Betty M, VNA client of over 10 years, wearing her VNA Medical Guardian help button around her neck)
