Mission Statement
Feeding 5,000 Inc. is a 501(c)3 organization that seeks to provide 5,000 families residing in Capitol Heights and nearby communities in Prince George’s County with fresh, affordable, naturally grown food within the next five years. This urban farming initiative was created to play an active role in combating significant problems facing Prince George’s County through innovative, grassroots, and community-involved training efforts that address critical issues such as the growing food desert crisis in Capitol Heights and surrounding communities, poverty, limited job opportunities, urban blight, and crime.
Description
Feeding 5,000 Inc. implements innovative urban farming practices and includes beekeeping opportunities that can be brought to just about any unused or low-used space, transforming it into a beautiful and productive nexus of fresh food for residents. In the process of doing this, Feeding 5,000 is designing and creating a variety of ways for local citizens to be involved. Activities range from informational 1-hour classes to summer training sessions and paid internship opportunities that teach the basics of urban farming, beekeeping, food distribution and storage, entrepreneurial opportunities and much more that will focus on addressing and combating problems of poverty, limited job opportunities, urban blight, crime, and food safety/security.
