Mission Statement

The National Park Service preserves unimpaired the natural and cultural resources and values of the national park system for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations. The park service cooperates with partners to extend the benefits of natural and cultural resource conservation and outdoor recreation throughout this country and the world.

Description

Community engagement has been a part of Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area (SMMNRA) for a long time and the park opened a downtown Los Angeles office to serve the local LA area community with a dedicated set of rangers to reach non-traditional and under served audiences. Staff has worked to create partnerships with local schools, recreation centers, and community organizations. Without federal lands in LA proper, the park works with LA County Parks and Recreation, city of Los Angles, Mountains Recreation Conservation Authority, and other local partners to conduct programming on their lands. Santa Monica Mountains targets park-poor communities for their outreach.
