Mission Statement

The Historic John Lane Farm, Inc, NFP, is trying to carry on the philanthropic work started by Mr. John Lane in 1833. It was during that year, and at the location of this farm, that he invented the first steel plow. He did not patent his invention. Instead, he offered the plans freely to farmers, hoping to lighten their workload. Therefore, Mr. Lane did not make any money off of his invention. John Deere, however, did patent this idea years later, and did become wealthy off of the patent.

Description

The Historic John Lane Farm, Inc. NFP, is interested in preserving what's left of the farm where John Lane invented the first steel plow. Our goal is to renovate the barn that is almost 90 years old, and was built with some of the original boards used by Mr. Lane in the 1800's. After the renovation is complete, our goal is to open it up to the community as a gathering place for meetings and other events. We would also like to open the barn to families and children from urban areas, to teach them about organic farming. Additionally, our goal is to open a small museum at this location, to preserve the things we have unearthed on the farm site, including many of Mr. Lane's original blacksmith tools. In this museum, there would also be places for other local artifacts.
