Mission Statement

The Friends is a non-profit, tax-exempt membership organization dedicated to the historic preservation, restoration and interpretation of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad as a living museum. The Friends’ stewardship responsibilities, shared with the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad Commission, railroad management and the communities within which the railroad operates, are accomplished in concert with the Commission’s key role of operating this unique historical asset as a tourist railroad. Performance of the Friends’ museum responsibilities supports the important economic development role of the railroad in the region.

Description

The Friends have been around since 1988 and serve as the museum arm of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, a National Historic Landmark, which operate through the majestic San Juan Mountains of southern Colorado and northern New Mexico. The Friends are responsible for maintaining the historical assets of the railroad plus interpreting the history of the Denver & Rio Grande Western narrow gauge railway system and region in which it operated. We hold seven 1-week long work sessions and restore historical railroad rolling stock and structures. Our organization also places two docents on each train daily to interpret the history for the riding public. Our organization in 2013 finished a $1.3 million restoration and rebuild of Locomotive 463 which was built in 1903 back to fully operational condition. Our organization offers volunteer opportunities during these summer work sessions with the scenic beauty of the San Juan Mountains as the backdrop.
