Mission Statement

We are building a free and open-source Internet of Things wireless data network owned and operated by its users in New York City.

Description

Established in 2016, The Things Network New York Inc. is bringing community-owned IoT wireless networking to NYC. Based on unlicensed spectrum and low-cost long-range devices, we're building a platform that will allow other community and civic groups to deploy remote-data sensing for use cases that were previously not economically feasible or practical for small teams to develop. We're already helping in areas like electric power monitoring in commercial buildings (to improve efficiency), environmental monitoring in rental apartments (to document landlord abuse), and food waste recycling (to increase the economic value of the product). WeManhattan Borough President Gale A. Brewer recently said:

"The Things Network lets independent municipal leaders like myself walk down a path that was previously unavailable to government, a third way between a municipal build out of a Wide Area Network and a massive franchise agreement with a private corporation. Together with The Things Network, government may now organize in concert with a diverse coalition of partners to create and enhance services at the local community level.

"New York can lead by example, showing American technologists that there is more than one way to do an IoT rollout. They don’t need to be done from the top down, with a government franchise and loads of commoditized data."
