Mission Statement
FOTBS is a non-profit corporation that promotes the importance of using and maintaining Boston Public Schools' outdoor spaces for teaching and learning.
Description
From 1996 to 2014, the City of Boston, the Boston Public Schools, and the Boston Schoolyard Funders Collaborative worked through the Boston Schoolyard Initiativ e (BSI) to reclaim over 135 acres of barren schoolyards in every neighborhood of Boston (see www.schoolyards.org for more details). Through this initiative, Boston became home to over 90 revitalized elementary K-5 and K-8 schoolyards, including 32 unique Outdoor Classrooms. In the past four years, additional schoolyards have been refurbished under the leadership of Mayor Walsh and Superintendent Chang. These beautiful vibrant schoolyards are centers for physical activity, teaching and learning, social emotional development, environmental stewardship, school gardening, and more. The goal of the FOTBS is to ensure that these spaces continue to be utilized.
