Mission Statement
TURNER FARM MISSION STATEMENT It is our mission to permanently preserve Turner and Meshewa Farms, drawing lessons from our rural heritage to help build a positive future, demonstrating that local, organic, low-impact food production grows healthy communities and healthy ecosystems. Turner Farm operations promote connections between people of all ages and the land that feeds them, in body, mind and spirit. Through education and example, we nurture understanding of the rhythms of nature, and our place in the natural world, fostering recognition of personal responsibility for stewardship of the land, ourselves and development of a nurturing community.
Description
Turner Farm’s Veteran to Farmer Training Program is designed to provide the training and resources necessary to help military veterans transition into successful careers in agriculture. This paid, fulltime training evolution lasts two years and takes place at Turner Farm and the farm’s VFTP incubator garden.
The program is designed to:
Train veterans in the basic skills of farming, including organic farming
Assist veterans with business and market planning
Connect veterans with members of the local food community
Help veterans find land and access to capital to start their own business
Turner Farm offers an impressive diversity of educational opportunities, including:
Crop and livestock management
Soil and pest management
Machinery and infrastructure maintenance
Produce sales and marketing
First-year VFTP trainees will complete a season of hands-on work and classroom education with the Turner Farm crop production staff and interns.
Second-year trainees will be responsible for running their own small business at the VFTP incubator garden. This includes crop planning, marketing and sales.
