Mission Statement

Willie Mae Rock Camp (WMRC) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering girls and gender-expansive youth through music education and mentorship.

Description

Willie Mae Rock Camp empowers historically underrepresented young people to develop their creative voices through tech-informed music education. We engage over 500 girls and gender-expansive youth ages 10-17 annually in free and sliding scale programs designed to increase students’ understanding, confidence, and ability to use a variety of electronic instruments and sound-based technologies as creative and expressive tools. By integrating the arts with contemporary technology, we position our students as creators in a tech-driven future - one in which they are heard and represented.

Our programs include community workshops giving students hands-on exposure to electronic instruments and sound-based technology; summer and after-school intensives in which students use music editing software to import, edit, and arrange sound files to create their own music; and in-school programs that enhance and expand music education in the classroom. Programming is facilitated by female and non-binary musicians and professionals in creative technology fields - allowing students to see themselves represented in creative leadership roles.
