Mission Statement

The SHARKS (Student Helping Relatives With Knowledge and Skills) Youth Program was founded in 2015 by C.O.M.E. at P.S. 83 to provide an outlet for youths ages 12 through 18, who have the responsibility of assisting a sick, disabled or elderly loved one. We have enrolled up to 20 children per school year and provided them with not only support and knowledge but an opportunity to be a kid again even if it’s only one weekend a month. As a child taking on the burden of caring for someone else on a day to day basis it’s easy to become overwhelmed both mentally, emotionally and physically as they attempt to balance this responsibility with their other roles and responsibilities. Our mission is to provide youth caregivers with support, recognition and resources to help them throughout their caregivers journey. We want to assure that they are able to maintain their social involvement and maintain their academic requirements.

Description

Caregivers Outreach Ministry Empowerment Inc was established in 2006 by Diane Cooper rN, Med, GNP the founder. Diane was one of the caregivers for her father, mother and presently her husband with COPD. At that time the focus was to support adult caregivers. We are the only organization in the NYC area that hosts Annual Family Caregivers Recognition luncheons in November for National Family Caregivers Month for the past 12 years. It was with research and screening of over 454 students that we realized that there was a need of support for youth caregivers. We realized there was a need and decided to take part in the solution. The program provides the students with a monthly support session and respite which includes trip to the movies, bowling, D&B, and Broadway plays. The SHARKS program is based on 3 foundations. The SHARKS Learn, The SHARKS GIVE Back and the SHARKS Have Fun. The SHARKS held the 1st purple day at PS 83 and donated $1000 to the Alzheimer's walk. The SHARKS is hosting its 1st Family Game Night on May 3, 2018. The SHARKS was recently recognized by Senator Bailey and the Old Field Planters organization.
We give back to the community by opening some of the educational sessions to the community through the local NYC public library. The SHARKS has appeared on several BronxNet TV programs. Please take a look at our websites comeoutreach.org SHARKSyouth.org
