Mission Statement

Washington Green Schools’ mission is to guide and support students and school communities to be leaders for the environment. Our vision is that every child will learn and grow in a green and healthy school.

Description

Washington Green Schools (WGS) guides and supports students and K-12 schools to be leaders for environmental sustainability in their communities. WGS provides a system of training and resources to educators, students, parents, and school district leaders to support environmental action in schools.

Green School Certification is WGS’s flagship program. Green Teams, including students, teachers, administrators, staff, and volunteers, lead action projects in six environmental categories (Energy, Water, Waste & Recycling, Healthy School Buildings, Transportation, and School Grounds & Gardens). WGS offers professional development, classroom resources, and an online report card for schools to track and communicate their progress.

WGS programs empower young people, educators, and community partners to organize and take action around local, environmental issues connected to their own lives. By facilitating broad involvement and sharing results, WGS inspires systemic changes that advance sustainability in schools throughout the state.
