You will get to know adult students in a small group (6-8 students), all of whom have the basics to express themselves verbally and in writing, but they need opportunities to practice and master more complex grammar. You will have a teacher manual and the support of a community of volunteer teachers, some of whom have been with us for many years. You will collaborate with another volunteer who teaches the same group on Thursdays, so you know what was covered, what was challenging for students, and what has been working well. Our program has been ongoing for almost 25 years and we have pretty much seen it all but this is the first year we have had to start missing one teacher! We have fabulous substitutes who filled in last week but we really need someone to take this group on for the rest of the school year. We are a solid community of volunteers because the students and our friends keep us coming. You will know you are valued and needed!

Our program offers free English classes for immigrants with free childcare! Volunteers will work under the supervision of Childcare Staff. We offer classes Tuesday & Thursday evenings from 6-8pm. We offer childcare in two groups - school ager children and babies/toddlers/pre-schoolers. During the warm months of the year, childcare staff and volunteers take the school-aged students to a nearby playground. During the cold months, we do crafts or play games indoors with them. Volunteers in the nursery help care for the babies/toddlers/pre-schoolers. We always need help holding babies during the shift and offering general supervision along with the nursery childcare staff.

Our program is well established in the community and has been ongoing in the same location since 2001. We offer 5 levels of English classes: Basic, Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, and Level 4. All course levels use the Ventures English Language Learning series books and are provided to students for free! Our classes are set up with one teacher and one assistant on Tuesdays, and a different teacher and assistant on Thursdays. Teachers and teaching assistants volunteer from 5:45 PM to 8 PM in a specific classroom so they develop a relationship with the students and understand what their needs are. The lead teachers have a teacher's manual and communicate to the lead teacher for the following class where the class left off, and what grammatical issues the class encountered, if any. Students can register and begin class at any point in the semester, and may take the same level course as many times as they need. Students may also change course levels at any point in the semester, if they need to be challenged or need to review material from a lower course level. Most of our volunteers have been with us for several years, some more than that. Our lead teachers have been with the program for many years, some for almost a decade!

Organization Information
Mission Statement
Eighth & College Connections, together with our River Bend neighborhood, seeks to create community in our extremely diverse neighborhood by generating, promoting and supporting programs and projects that bring together people of different ethnic racial, religious and language backgrounds, of varying ages, economic backgrounds, sexual orientations and any other differences which divide us. The ELL program, a project of Eighth & College Connections, is a multicultural, multilingual community that welcomes all people who wish to expand their English skills and form friendships across social barriers in order to enrich their lives and help shape a deeper and more welcoming community.
Description
Our primary project is English classes in four levels for immigrant and refugee adults, with a free childcare program to allow parents with children to attend. We emphasize relationship building between volunteers and students. We also have a community garden project and collaborate on a prison van project to enable neighbors to visit relatives and loved ones in distant state prisons.
