Mission Statement

The mission of the O’Brien School is to bring an empowered future to the children of a Maasai community by providing an education emphasizing modern health standards, English language instruction, entrepreneurial and vocational training, sustainable agricultural methods, and honesty and respect for fellow human beings. Understanding the influence of tribal women on the success of our project, we offer skills-building programs to help them support their rise out of poverty. Their role will be instrumental in inspiring their children to become the next generation of leaders in Tanzania, Africa - and the world.

Description

The O'Brien School for the Maasai is a community-based primary school located in Sanya Station Village of the Kilimanjaro Region in Northern Tanzania. While the school accepts students of all tribes, the village is predominately inhabited by Maasai.

The school is one of just a couple of primary schools in the area, covering a total population of over 5,000 individuals. By providing both an inexpensive, quality education and community development programs in Sanya Station, the O'Brien School for the Maasai offers the only educational and development opportunity for the majority of the village.

Since 2007, the O'Brien School for the Maasai has tested and refined its model of holistic, enhanced, and high-quality education. Always guided by local Maasai elders and leaders, the school responds to the students' and community's most urgent and important needs while maintaining our core mission of primary-level education.
