The mission of MasterVoices is to imagine, stage, and perform masterful and innovative musical programs that delight inspire, and educate New York City's diverse audiences and communities.
MasterVoices was founded in 1941 by Robert Shaw, the "dean of American choral singing," who believed the human voice to be the world’s most powerful instrument. Under his baton the chorus became a moral force - then known as The Collegiate Chorale, it broke new ground by being interfaith and multiracial, performing at significant events including the opening of the United Nations. Today the voice remains at the heart of our concerts, from our acclaimed 100+ member chorus to the dazzling array of world-‐class soloists who perform with us each year. We also remain compelled by art as social change - while our repertoire has expanded to encompass multiple genres, styles, cultures and centuries, our volunteer chorus continues to represent members from all walks of life. Whether in a community bandshell or at Carnegie Hall, MasterVoices’ performances celebrate the power of vocal music to connect, unite, and inspire
