CARES mission is to minimize further transmisison of HIV and maximize the quality of life for all person affected by HIV in southwest Michigan.
CARES is a community-based AIDS service organization serving eleven counties in southwest Michigan. CARES provides HIV prevention education for high risk populations including men who have sex with men, injecting drug users and high risk heterosexuals. Programs include individual and group health education/risk reduction, counseling, testing, and referral. CARES distributes risk reduction information and products including condoms, lubricants and clean needles where legal. CARES provides psycho-social support services for persons living with HIV including case management, buddy/transportation and various support groups. All services are offered at no fee to persons seeking services. CARES is guided by an all volunteer board of directors, staffed by professionals and assisted by trained volunteers. Last year CARES provided prevention education for over 10,000 persons. Of the 860 HIV tests, the rate of discovery was five times higher than the national average fo counseling and testing sites. The rate of return for test results was over 90%. CARES provided support for over 200 person living with HIV. The most recent client survey indicated 74% of the persons agreed their life was better because they were with CARES.
