Mission Statement

The San Bernardino County Library System is a dynamic network of library branches that serves a diverse population over a vast geographic area. The San Bernardino County Library strives to provide equal access to information, technology, programs, and services for all people who call San Bernardino County home. The Adult Literacy program is just one of the many free programs that the San Bernardino County Library has to offer. This program provides free, individualized literacy services and materials to our patrons, community members and their families in a non-threatening, confidential, student-centered environment, in order to equip participants with lifelong learning skills and prepare them for personal, family, career and community success.

Description

Patient, Kind, and Committed individuals needed for the adult literacy program at the Lake Arrowhead Branch of the County of San Bernardino Library.

Requirements:
* Has earned a high school diploma
* Can read, speak and write English
* Possesses basic computer skills
* Basic knowledge of internet and email use
* Possesses a strong desire to help others
Must attend a three hour tutor training
* Commit to a minimum of six months involvement
* Create lesson plans in advance for each session
* Keep records such as monthly reporting of your
hours, learner progress and changes in status
* Schedule meetings with adult learner one to two
times a week

After potential tutors have attended the tutor
training, they are matched with learners based
on schedules, compatibility and interests. They
will meet with the Literacy Specialist to review
their learner’ s assessment, their goal sheet, and
one or two study books. An appointment will
be scheduled for the tutor to meet the learner.
At that time they will exchange phone numbers
and set up their weekly session time. All sessions
will be held at the library.
