Mission Statement

The mission of The Village School is to provide an education that fully integrates the arts with an academic curriculum, guided by observations of child development that promote the healthy growth of the whole human being - the head (thinking), the heart (feeling), and the hands (willing). Further, The Village School strives to create a community that honors truth, beauty, and goodness and encourages development of the inherent gifts of each school community member.

Description

The Village School was founded in 2000 within the intentions set down by 1999 Oregon statute:
as a legitimate avenue for parents, educators and community members to take responsible risks to create new, innovative and more flexible ways of educating children within the public school system (ORS 338.015). The Village School opened its doors as one of Oregon's first community organized charter schools. The school's educational model is based on the work of Rudolf Steiner blended with other contemporary educational and social practices. As a hybrid program, The Village School strives to incorporate the best current practices in holistic child rearing and education. The Village School currently serves children in grades K-8. The curriculum emphasizes the importance of balancing the growing child's emerging capacities by serving the intellect through academics and by offering children daily opportunities for experiences of movement, music, drama, and art. Multiculturalism, respect for the natural world, and community are important elements in the daily school experience.
