Mission Statement
The UC Berkeley School of Public Health and UC San Francisco School of Medicine are conducting a longitudinal study on how childhood stress, eating behavior, and nutrition impact adult health, cellular aging, and the health of offspring. NGHS is a follow-up study to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) Growth and Health Study taking place from 1987 to 1997. NGHS aims to look at how stress affects women's nutrition, health, and weight. In addition, the project focuses on factors related to children's weight, the transmission of stress across generations, and the correlation between race and health.
Description
The NGHS is housed within the Nutrition Policy Institute. NPI conducts and evaluates research related to the impact of nutrition and physical activity on public health. NPI prizes research that provides a strong basis for public policies that can eliminate health disparities, especially those stemming from lack of access to healthy foods and opportunities for physical activity.
