The NYG&B is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation of New York family history. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, our mission is to preserve, document, and share the history and stories of families across the state of New York. For the past 150 years, we have been preserving valuable genealogical and historical records, producing peer-reviewed genealogical scholarship, and providing crucial resources to help amateur and professional genealogists navigate New York genealogy research. The volume of material we aim to preserve is significant and we rely heavily on volunteers to help digitize these records. We provide training on the use of the digitization and image processing equipment which are both easy to learn. For indexing, we are eager to find volunteers with some experience looking at old records and reading handwriting, but we also provide training on this. High School students are encouraged to sign up. We can accommodate afterschool hours (2 or 3pm until 5 pm). A typical volunteer shift is 2-4 hours during office hours (Monday - Friday, 9am - 5 pm). Interest in genealogy is welcome, but not mandatory. Volunteers should be very comfortable using a mouse, looking at a screen, and sitting in a chair or standing at a desk for 2-4 hours.

The New York Genealogical and Biographical Society (NYG&B) preserves, documents, and shares family history and stories from across New York State. We engage with genealogists, biographers, historians, and organizations to establish the broader contexts of New York’s past. We actively foster connections between New York’s past and present. We are seeking skilled volunteers who can commit to 2-4 hours per day, 1 day per week, to assist with a variety of projects and tasks related to our digital collections. Proficiency in Excel, Google Sheets, and working with files in Windows (naming, saving, moving, copying) is required. Examples of projects and tasks include: Assisting with organizing physical documents so that they may be indexed Identifying what needs to be indexed in a specific collection and creating spreadsheets for that indexing project Indexing records in a Google Sheet or Excel sheet using physical documents or online records Doing quality control of images using image software in the office (training provided) Scanning records using a high-powered scanner in the office (training provided) Saving images to an external drive and copying the files to another computer Experience using or working with historical records and handwritten documents is a plus. Genealogy and family history enthusiasts with computer skills and experience researching online collections are encouraged to sign up!

A key part of our Digitize New York initiative is the preservation of at-risk records. This work is largely carried out in our New York City, Central New York, and Western New York Digitization Centers as well as with mobile Digitization Kits around the state. In-person volunteers at both centers learn to expertly assess, scan, and organize historic records. Volunteers in the Syracuse area are invited to help us in our mission to preserve historic records from across New York State. The Central New York Digitization Center is located within the offices of the William G. Pomeroy Foundation on E. Brighton Avenue in Syracuse, NY. Digitization volunteers are trained to: Scan documents Handle fragile records Transport materials to and from partners and off-site storage Follow best practices for file management and inventory Our Central New York Digitization Center has a state-of-the-art CopiBook OS A2 Scanner that we typically operate Tuesday through Thursday in three hour shifts, starting at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Volunteers are asked to commit to a shift once a week for at least three months. Interested in working in our Central New York Digitization Center? Email volunteer@nygbs.org. Training will be provided remotely.
