Mission Statement

The Nature Conservancy is a non-profit conservation organization whose mission is to preserve the plants, animals, and natural communities that represent the diversity of life on Earth by protecting the lands and waters they need to survive.

Description

The Nature Conservancy's Virginia program protects habitat for rare and endangered species throughout the state. Our most well-known technique is buying land to establish nature preserves, but it uses many other creative, cooperative methods. Currently it owns 31 preserves, totalling 65,000 acres throughout Virginia. Another 155,000 acres have been acquired by the Conservancy and sold for management to other conservation groups, both public and private, throughout the state.
