Mission Statement

To establish an orchestra that reaches out to a cross section of the New York community, including young and minority audiences, by presenting traditional masterpieces, as well as contemporary and World Music in a new accessible manner.

Description

We showcase engaging and virtuoso performances of new works alongside traditional repertoire using established and innovative venues in non-traditional ways such as the use of Washington Square in Methodist Church and other non-formal concert halls. We support the community by performing in schools in order to expose children to orchestral music. GVP targets young and minority audiences by programming world music and commissioning new hybrid compositions that cross music genres. Currently, Mihanovich of Brazil, Cordeiro of Venezuela, and Giovanni Sòllima of Sicily are composing music to be performed by the our ensemble. We provide a forum for consummate musicians who are probing more deeply into the emotional and expressive dimensions of performing. GVP inspires audiences into a more active role through an ever-broadening interactive experience. A goal of GVP is to guide the audience over the course of the season to take an active, rather than a passive approach to listening; to be accomplished by talks given by the conductor, composer and musicians during the performance. We are dedicated to exploring new forms of expression in these concerts by utilizing new technologies such as multi-media and the Internet.
