Mission Statement

MISSION STATEMENT The Flamenco Arts Festival mission is to place a spotlight on Hispanic Heritage Month through the presentation of world-class flamenco performances and related arts educational programs; promote and preserve the art of flamenco; make the performing arts accessible to families and children; diversify the performing arts calendar; and build bridges of positive experiences between people. HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH National Hispanic Heritage Month was initiated in 1968 by President Lyndon Johnson and expanded to a one-month celebration in 1988 by President Ronald Reagan. It is designed to recognize the Hispanic presence in the United States and the contributions they make to enhance the quality of life in America. The Flamenco Arts Festival joyfully joins the nation in celebrating, not only Hispanics, but also the heritage and culture of all Americans, which is freely shared with all who value the richness that comes with diversity.

Description

The Flamenco Arts Festival (FAF) is a unique international cultural arts event presenting world-class flamenco performances and relevant and impactful educational arts programs. It is an annual event that brings a prominent flamenco company from Spain to Santa Barbara. For 4 days, the visiting guest artists perform, teach, lecture, interact with participants, and represent Spain. The FAF annual festivities include live concerts, lectures, films, award presentations, workshops, and celebrations.

For September 2017, the FAF returns to proudly welcome Patricia Guerrero on the Lobero stage with the U.S. premier of UPCLOSE, Guerrero’s latest production. Already considered a master at the age of 27, Patricia Guerrero’s performances are nothing short of pure exhilaration, and UPCLOSE will put her world-renowned dancing up front and center.

Based on the fundamental components of flamenco - baile (dance), cante (song), and toque (guitar) - UPCLOSE will feature Guerrero performing solo with her musicians. While seemingly simple in concept, the performance will be anything but, as Guerrero pays tribute to past flamenco traditions while embracing new concepts and expressions of her own. Showcasing the phenomenon that is Patricia Guerrero, UPCLOSE will surely set the stage ablaze.

Visit flamencoarts.org for a complete list of FAF events, including dance and music workshops.
