Mission Statement
a) To provide for professional, scientific and technical communication among the members; b) To establish a ;library from which the membership may obtain information; c) To establish and maintain a museum of diving history in which to preserve store and display artifacts and documents of historical record and value. This museum shall be open to the public on a fee basis; d) To develop and promote programs and projects for the improvement of scientific and technical knowledge within the membership and the general public.
Description
[The Institute of Diving is a non-profit, educational organization formed in 1977. The initial idea for establishing the institute and its museum (Man in the Sea Museum) was conceived in 1976 by a group of divers from the U.S. Navy's SEALAB Program and representatives from commercial, academic, scientific, medical, and sport diving fields. Explore the history of diving and man’s first underwater habitat-SEALAB I developed at Panama City’s Naval base in 1964. Four Navy Divers lived and worked in SEALAB for 11 days in 193 ft of water off the coast of Bermuda.
Museum hours: Tuesday - Saturday 10 AM- 3PM
