Mission Statement

World Change Starts with Educated Children. We envision a world in which all children can pursue a quality education that enables them to reach their full potential and contribute to their communities and the world. Room to Read seeks to transform the lives of millions of children in low-income countries by focusing on literacy and gender equality in education. Working in collaboration with local communities, partner organizations and governments, we develop literacy skills and a habit of reading among primary school children, and support girls to complete secondary school with the relevant life skills to succeed in school and beyond.

Description

The New York chapter consists of volunteers who fundraise to support Room to Read's programs and raise awareness of Room to Read in our local community. Please see our open volunteer positions, or reach out to ny@roomtoread.org if you would like to get involved. Check our website, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to stay connected!

Founded in 2000 on the belief that World Change Starts with Educated Children(r), Room to Read’s innovative model focuses on deep, systemic transformation within schools in low-income countries during two time periods that are most critical in a child’s schooling: early primary school for literacy acquisition and secondary school for girls’ education. We work in collaboration with local communities, partner organizations and governments to develop literacy skills and a habit of reading among primary school children and ensure girls can complete secondary school with the skills necessary to negotiate key life decisions. Room to Read has benefited 11.5 million children across over 20,000 communities in 14 countries and aims to reach 15 million children by 2020. Learn more at www.roomtoread.org.
